The National Sports Commission, NSC, has described the negligence and rapid degradation of sports and its infrastructure in the Southeast region as worrisome and alarming, stressing the significance of reviving the sector.
Despite the numerous challenges affecting the development and promotion of sports in the zone, the Commission acknowledged that the region is blessed with abundant talents and will continue to produce generation of sportsmen and women that would represent the country in major competitions.
The NSC Southeast Zonal Coordinator, Benard Ezeama made this remarks during the 2025 Southeast Zonal Elimination games for Team Sports, at the Indoor Multipurpose Gymnasium Hall, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, today.
The Coordinator identified funding, sponsorship, infrastructure, manpower, as well as lack of school sports activities as part of the challenges hampering the growth and upgrade of sports, while calling on the relevant authorities to rally around the sector so as to put out policies and programs that will impact positively in the zone.
Meanwhile, the zonal elimination games which will see Under-15 athletes from the participating states qualify for Team Sports in the National Youth Games, NYG, scheduled to hold in Asaba later this month, commenced today, and will run till 18th August.
The games which will begin tomorrow will see competition in ball events such as football, volleyball, handball, cricket, basketball, beach volleyball, hockey,, abula, baseball and rugby, just as athletes, coaches and officials from the five south eastern states have started arriving.
