Team Enugu emerged victorious in the 3rd edition of the National Para Games Festival, held in Abuja, today, amassing a total of 55 medals comprising of 40 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze on the overall medal standing.
The 10-day biannual multi sports fiesta, organized by the National Sports Commission, NSC, witnessed the presence of some top government functionaries, sports enthusiasts, coaches, journalists from within and across the country, as they trroup in their number to catch a glimpse of the spectacle.
Enugu State contingents in day one the event, showed class, dexterity and determination with the likes of
Lekan Abdullahii, Bose Omobami, Ganiyu Talatt, Kehinde Lawal and Emmanuel David writing the names in gold in Para Canoeing, Para Table Tennis, Para Swimming and Para Athletics events.
The team did not give room for any form of compliancy to set in, as it recorded more gold medal in wheel chair basketball, Para shooting, Para badminton and wheel chair tennis, while silver and bronze medals were also registered in some o the events of the competition.
Team Enugu again proved it’s mettle in the highly contested Para Athletics events, outshining and outclassing every state with an absolute amazing statistics of 20 medals that include 14 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze.
In his words yesterday, the Enugu State Ministry for Youth and Sports Development, ably led the young and dynamic Commissioner, Barrister Lloyd Ike Ekwermadu, has congratulated the contingent’s saying that the development is a true testament of hard work, diligence and commitment.
The Commissioner, who was full of praises for the present administration’, reiterated that the financial and moral backings from the state government, with the quality of athletes recruitment and training, played a pivotal part in achieving such feat.
Energy FM sports correspondent, Ugochukwu Okeiyi, reports that Team Enugu who competed in 8 disciplines which include Para Canoeing, Para Athletics Para Swimming, ,, Para powerlifting, Para Table Tennis, Para athletics, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Tennis and Para Badminton came tops ahead states such as Bayelsa, Edo,, Lagos, Rivers Abia, in the competition
