Lions Football Club has emerged champions of the 2024 New Haven Football League by defeating Omega FC 2-0 in a thrilling and exciting final match at New Haven Playing Field, Upper Chime.
The month long championship, which was sponsored by Liqu moil had a total of eight teams which include Doulacs FC, Omega FC, R-Linders, Lions FC, Sims FC, Young Stars FC, Bees FC and Guiness FC from different parts of New Haven and its environs jostling for the star prize.
Pacy and Aggressive attacker, Ogbodo Arinze was the goals hero for his side, as he broke the deadlock with less than five minutes to the end of the first half when he finished off a well-timed cross from close range that left Omega FC’s goalkeeper rooted to a spot.
The attacker doubled the lead midway through the second 45 minutes from a précise free kick at the edge of penalty area after the centre referee adjudged the opposing player for a dangerous tackle.
All efforts by Omega FC to come back into the game proved abortive as Lions FC were resolute especially in their midfield and defence areas to nullify any threat.
Speaking after the match, Ogbodo Arinze who was voted, man of the match, expressed admiration for the overall performance of their performance, adding that their hard work and doggedness paid off.
Also Speaking, Coach of Lions FC, Eze Stanley, praised his players for putting up an excellent display, pointing out that this feat have banished the disappointment of last year’s edition.
According to the Sponsor, Zubby, the competition was very intense, action filled and exciting as participating teams put up amazing performances, promising that next year”s edition would be bigger and better.
On his part, former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Chigozie Agbim (MON), applauded the organizers of the competition, attributing the victory to sheer determination and commitment on the part of the players.
Meanwhile, as winners of this year’s edition, Lions FC were rewarded with the sum of #250,000, a giant trophy and medals while runners up, Omega FC got #150,000 with medals.
