Team Enugu emerged winner in the maiden edition of the Southeast 4-on-4 Handball Championship, by thrashing Abia State (28-9), at the Nsukka Sports Club, at the weekend.
Despite the heavy down power which tried to disrupt the activities of the closing ceremony, the games lived to expectations as supporters, sports enthusiasts and passerbys troop in their number to catch a glimpse of the excitement.
The Coach Emeka Idoko led side trailed by 5+0, and with a player sent out for a technical foul during the first quarter but the host had to alter their set up, bounced back really quickly and aggressively to turn the tide by 16-5.
On resumption of the third quarter, the young and vibrant, Team Abia showed a lot of determination and intensity in their offensive play but met with the heroics of the opposing goalkeeper, Chukwuemeka Obu who kept the score line at 16-9.
Meanwhile, in the third place game played earlier, Team Anambra lost to Imo State (7+17), just as certificates and medals were presented to the outstanding players, participating teams, coaches and officials.
The competition which had the five Southeast states participating, from the Tuesday, 7th July, was designed the discover, nurture and mentor the next generation of players and officials.
With this feat, Team Enugu will represent the region at the National Handball Championship that will hold in Adamawa later in the year, while the event also witnessed the successful conclusion of the Under-12 and Under-15 referee course for aspiring referee in the region.
