The Enugu State Boxing Association, ESBA, have concluded plans and arrangements for the state contingents ahead of the next year’s Olympic, All Africa Games and International boxing qualifiers, scheduled to take place on 19th and 20th July, 2023, at the Boxing Gymnasium Hall, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
The contingents who have intensified their training and preparation in the last two weeks, under the watchful eyes of the State Boxing Coach, Blaise Udeh, at the State Sports Council, along Independence Layout at the weekend, are exuding so much confidence and are in high spirit for the championship.
In an exclusive chat with Powersports correspondent, Bronze medalist at the National Sports Festival, Delta State in 2022, Victory Michael, competing in the Super heavyweight category, stated that only exceptional performance at the championship would guarantee a call up to the national camp, reiterating that he has been preparing for such an opportunity.
On his part, Isreal Ogboso, a silver and bronze medalist at the 2022 National Boxing Championship in Kaduna and 2021 National Sports Festival in Edo State, understands the expectations from such a championship because of previous exposures, insisting that he is good enough to be in the national camp.
Reacting to the significance of the competition to boxing in the state, Coach Blaise Udeh is confident in the abilities of his athletes because the opportunity creates an avenue for the boxers to showcase their talents and skills, while also appreciating the Enugu State Boxing Chairman and other executives for their immense support and contributions.
To this end, the four athletes that would be representing Team Enugu at the competition include Victory Michael (Super heavyweight), Israel Ogbodo (Featherweight), Udeh Somoto (Middleweight) and Modest Agbo (Light heavy).
