Team Enugu emerged overall winner in this year’s edition of the Southeast Boxing Championship with 7 gold and 3 silver medals, at the Indoor Sports Gymnasium Hall of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
The competition which was organized by the Southeast Boxing Federation in collaboration with the Enugu State Ministry of Youth and Sports, witnessed over 60 boxers from Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia and Anambra States jostling for the star prize.
The 3-day event which climaxed over the weekend had dignitaries from far and near that graced the grande finale, as fans, scouts, boxing enthusiasts and passerby’s trooped in the number to catch a glimpse of the excitement.
Speaking after the medal and prize presentation ceremony, former international, George Ibedinro expressed displeasure over the level of neglect and deterioration boxing has undergone over the years, noting that the present generation of boxers need to be encouraged and supported.
Also Speaking, the Chairman Southeast Boxing Association, Johnson Okeke, explained that the aim of the competition was to discover and groom talented boxers for future engagements, while applauding the host state for organising the competition.
On his part, Israel Ogbodo (Enugu State) who was also crowned as one of the best boxers of the championship, was indeed excited and overwhelmed by the reception, stating that he has being working hard for such kind of opportunity.
Meanwhile, Team Abia placed second on the final medals chart with 3 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze medals, while Ebonyi had 2 gold and 4 silver and Anambra with 1 gold and 3 bronze medals.
