The Southeast National Sports Commission, NSC, has issued a stern warning to all the elected candidates from the zone at the just concluded sports elections, stressing that the Commission will not hesitate to take disciplinary actions or measures to curb any form of misconduct from any of the representatives.
The Commission, who also congratulated the winners, emphasized that representing the zone at the Federation level is not a position or platform for enrichment or personal gains rather a call to service, urging the representatives to go the extra mile to revamp sports in the region.
NSC Southeast Coordinator, Benard Ezema made the statement shortly after the successful conclusion of the zonal elections, at the Indoor Multipurpose Gymnasium Sports Hall, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, yesterday.
According to him, the elections which witnessed 18 candidates contesting in 23 sporting federations was free, fair and credible, just as the exercise met all stipulated guidelines and regulations.
Also Speaking, a member of the national electoral committee and the Southeast Supervisory Chairman, Alhaji Lawal Adeoye Wahid admitted that the zone is blessed with enormous talents that can take the world by storm but due to government negligence, incompetent and corrupt administrators, the talents are yet to be fully harnessed.
In a related development, Chairman of the Enugu State Handball Association and a member of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, HFN, Emmanuel Asogwa, has reaffirmed that his primary objective is to produce a team can compete favorably in any major championship, while assuring that the states will soon start to experience new developments.
On the issue of how sports can be revived in the zone, the All African Games and Olympic medalist, Chika Chukwumereje, has called on the relevant stakeholders to throw their weight behind the sport, noting that sponsorship, accountability and transparency will play a major role.
Meanwhile, other sporting federations that successfully concluded their elections at the weekend include fives, Golf, Karate, Hockey, Kickboxing, Tennis, Traditional Sports, Wrestling, Rugby, Weshu, Squash and Deaf Federation.
