The Nsukka local government has reiterated that the significance of sports in any developed society cannot be overemphasized, while reaffirming it’s commitment towards sports development in the various communities.
The local government further enumerated some of the sporting strides it has attained since assumption of office, pledging that it will continually putting out programs and activities that will enhance the living standard of the community especially young people.
Speaking during the closing ceremony of the maiden edition of the Southeast 4-on-4 handball championship, at the Nsukka Sports Club, at the weekend, the Chairman of Nsukka local government area, Engineer Jude Asogwa, commended Team Enugu for winning the tournament, saying that the local government has what it takes to host any major championship.
Also Speaking, National Sports Commission, Southeast Zonal Coordinator, Bernard Ezema, expressed immense satisfaction over the level of organization and competition, reassuring that he will constantly use his position on the Commission to develop sports across the region.
Reflecting on the development, the President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, HFN, Jubril Saidu, appreciated the local government for all its numerous interventions in sports, formally requesting that Nsukka should host the next National Under-17 handball championship.
In his words, HFN Southeast representative, Emmanuel Asogwa, disclosed that the program is designed to produce the next generation of players, officials and coaches, adding that the teams and players showed a high level sportsmanship.
For emerging.victorious at the competition, Team Enugu carted home the whooping sum of #500, 000, medals and a giant trophy and will also be representing the zone in forthcoming National 4-on-4 Handball Championship in Adamawa State later in the year.
Abia and Imo States who placed second and third received the sum of #300,000 and #200,000 naira and medals, while Thank God Ossai (Enugu) emerged as the Most Valuable Player, Imo State Success Chinwedu got the Best goalkeeper award and Team Anambra received the best behaved team award
