WE CAN PRODUCE NATIONAL TEAM PLAYERS – IFUNANYA IDOKO

Aside being an important unifying factor and a platform for youth empowerment, research has proven that sports is one of the biggest nation’s revenue earner and a hub for talents exposure globally, and so the Enugu State Handball Association (ESHA) is optimistic of producing talents that can give the country a good representation at major under-age championship.

It would be recalled that only recently the association rolled out its plans and programs for the second quarter of the year, laying emphasis on grassroots development and the possibility of playing in the national league.

In an exclusive interview over the weekend with sports correspondent, Ugo Okeiyi, at the Handball Court of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Coach of St. Catherine’s Comprehensive Secondary School, Nsukka, Ifunanya Idoko hinted that despite putting up a team in less than 5 months, she was impressed with the performance of her girls, hoping that they can win laurels for the state.

Reflecting on how they fared against an experienced and physical Enugu side, 16 year-old Achibuoke Gift Chimudalu explained how tough the game was because they were bullied and harassed as a result of their size, advocating for such games to build their confidence and improve their game.

In his words, Captain Team Enugu (male), Elo Onyekachi Frank stressed on the intensity and competiveness both sides displayed, adding that the younger and new players are been incorporated and also getting along.

Also speaking, Nwosu Chibuzor Juliana, captain enugu female team stated that their victory over the counterparts from Nsukka did not come on platter of gold, praising the new players for making a positive impact in the game.

However, in the keenly contested match which was witnessed by fans, supporters and lovers of handball within and outside the stadium complex. It was Team Enugu who narrowly carried the day defeating Team Nsukka both in the female and male categories by (13-11),(36-33) respectively. And the reverse fixture is schedule to hold at the handball court of the Nsukka Sports Club in a fortnight.
